Philips headscrew drivers

Rachet

10 mm deep socket

Flat blade screwdriver

First, Remove the lower steering column cover, use the 10mm socket to loosen the bolts, remove the screws. There is a small ignition ring, a small plastic piece, remove the plastic piece and then remove the lower steering column cover. There will be a wire connected near the fuse box panel, just push the tab to disengage the terminal connector. Upon removal of the electrical tab connector, you may now lower the steering wheel column cover for additional space to work on.

Second step, we need to remove the steering wheel column cover. You need to remove the steering wheel itself and you will see that there are screws hidden just behind the steering wheel, just remove the screws (normally these are 2 screws connecting the steering wheel cover to the steering wheel column). Upon steering the wheel at 180 degrees from right to left and vice versa, you will be able to access these screws. After removing the screws, there will be another screw just below the center portion of the steering wheel column, remove this screw. There will also be a shield cover under this steering wheel column, remove it by just pulling it out gently. There are also 2 bolts to be removed at the sides of the steering wheel column, use the 10mm socket and ratchet to remove these bolts. If you were to see another pair of screws that are near the 10mm bolt screws, use your flat blade screwdriver to remove these screws. Upon removal of the bolts screws, remove the supporting bracket of the steering column cover and set aside. The ignition switch that we will be replacing is right underneath the dashboard between the steering columns just above the gas paddle. The ignition switch is firmly attached by another 2 screws but of the reverse side, so you need to feel the head of the screws to remove it.

Third, you need to remove the electrical connectors pressing on the lock tab and remove the connectors. Once you have removed the ignition switch, you need to compared, side by side, the brand new ignition switch and the old one. You need to check if it is identically the same, which includes the mounting tabs, screw tab holes, electrical terminals. If everything is identical to each other, then proceed with the reinstallation.

Fourth step, we reinstall the ignition switch by gently placing it over the same position as that of the older ignition switch. Do not force the screws into the screw tab area as it may break the new switch tabs. Turn the screws in with gently motion and should not have any resistance during screw placement. After this, use the screwdriver to tighten to position. Reinstall the electrical connector of the ignition switch. A little tug of the connectors will check it the connectors are in place. Then, reinstall the steering column shield that we had set aside.

Reinstall the bolts and tighten them up using the racket and screwdriver. Make sure that the wires are well tucked in, and there would be no wires hanging loose. Reinstall the bottom screw at the middle of steering wheel cover. Raise the lower steering wheel cover to reinstall it, reconnect the wiring connector that was removed earlier near the steering wheel fuse box at the left side facing the steering wheel. You will hear a click sound to ensure that the connector has been seated well. Push the lower steering wheel cover back and reinstall the 2 screws below the steering wheel and tighten. Test the ignition switch by turning the keys and the engine will start.

You might consider having your ignition switch replacement done by a locksmith rather than a dealership service because it’s way a lot cheaper on labor cost compared to the latter option.

When your key is stuck into the ignition switch, the problem is that the tumbler part of the ignition switch is broken, so that’s why you won’t be able to turn your key to remove it from the ignition switch. You don’t have to replace the entire ignition switch assembly, just the tumbler part. I will be using a Toyota Camry as a car example guide.

First, you need to remove the plastic cover just above the steering wheel column, just try to snap it off and it will pop out and give you room for access. Then, remove the panel cover off which is at the left side of the driver seat very near the door, just pull it off and it will be removed. Then take the small excess panels off so you would be able to remove the screws. Using your screwdriver, remove the screws that hold the steering wheel column in place. Once the screws are removed, you will be able to remove the bottom of the dash with ease and will give you more space to work on. Turn the steering wheel from left to right and vice versa to access the 2 screws just beneath the steering wheel. Remove these screws and then just pry the steering wheel cover using a flat head screw and then you can easily pull it out. You can also pull out the top portion of the steering wheel cover at this time.

Second, you now have access to the ignition switch. Turn the key into ACC (accessory) position, after this, you need a small rod (a paint brush rod or stick) to push into the side of the ignition switch hole. Once you have inserted the rod stick into the ignition key rod hole, you may now pull the whole ignition key assembly right out from the ignition key bracket.

Third, you need to buy a new ignition key assembly and have it compared side by side to ensure identical key assembly parts. After buying the new key assembly, you just slide the new key assembly right into the ignition switch bracket until it snaps. This will give you an idea that the key assembly is already in place.

Fourth step, you must test the new key assembly first by turning the key and wait for the engine to start. You need to test the key assembly before you return the steering wheel column and covers back. The engine should start up and test if the keys will come out after turning off the engine.

Fifth step, place the top steering wheel cover first, and then snap the bottom steering wheel cover on. Reinstall the 2 screws that hold the steering wheel cover just beneath the steering wheel. And then snap the cover piece back on located just above the top cover of the steering wheel column. And then take the lower left bottom cover piece back to its original position by snapping it on to the dash column. Reinstall the screws that hold the dash column to prevent it from falling off while you’re driving.

You might as well have this done by a professional locksmith than have it fixed by your car dealership to lessen the cost of labor with same quality of workmanship.

There are so many reasons why the ignition switch on a car might not work, that we need to first rule out some obvious causes. These basic steps can save you both money and time, and an unnecessary trip to the mechanic.

First of all, make sure that your car battery is fully charged and that the battery terminals are clean. Batteries terminals can become corroded.

Second, check the steering wheel column. Some cars’ steering columns lock up and it takes some time to get a key in the best position to release the lock and start the car. Be patient, jiggle the steering wheel and try turning the wheel in quick, short turns back and forth as you turn the key. If that is not the problem, check your ignition switch to see if it is working. Turn the key all the way on and look for the red warning lights to come on the dashboard. If they don’t light up, your ignition switch might be bad. In that case, you simply replace it with a new one.

Once you determine that the ignition switch is working but the car still wont turn on, you should check the ignition coil. If you don’t have the right tools, you will need to have the coil tested with a device called a multimeter.

The problem could be the starter wire, which can become corroded, so you should test the shortest of the two starter wires to see if there is a current. Any electrical work has risks, so please use caution.

Another culprit could be moisture on your distributor cap. Take the cap off and check to see if it is wet or dry. Rain can get under the distributor cap. Make sure it is completely dry and put the cap back on.

On the other hand, your car might have electrical issues, so you need to check all of the connections to be sire the wires are not loose.

If you have gone through this checklist but your car still won’t start, you could have a fuel problem that a mechanic would be able to diagnose and fix.

Acura | Aston Martin | Audi | Bentley | BMW | Buick | Bugatti | Cadillac | Chevrolet (Chevy) | Chrysler | Daewoo | Dodge | Ferrari | Ford | Fuji | GM / GMC | Honda | Hyundai | Hummer | Isuzu | Infiniti | Jaguar | Jeep | Kia | Lamborghini | Land Rover | Lexus | Lincoln | Maserati | Mazda | Mercedes Benz | Mercury | Mini | Mitsubishi | Nissan | Nummi | Oldsmobile | Pontiac | Porche | Rolls Royce | Saturn | Scion | Spyker | Subaru | Suzuki | Toyota | Volkswagen | Volvo

Lock and security experts these days need to keep up thanks to a industry of ever-changing security measures. If lacking this kind of capability, a locksmith technician may pretty much be moved right out the market as fast as twelve years or less on account of the swift discoveries in security. To stay efficient and service many possible customers, lots of Tampa locksmiths work twenty four hours, every single day. The most efficient lock techs in Tampa Florida usually are those which will help with automotive, residential, and commercial demands any time of day or night.

A large percentage of lock techs invest much of the day time operating on cars and trucks. It is actually a lock specialist’s responsibility to learn the best ways to approach the diverse lock devices among various brands of motor vehicles. Services that account for almost all of a lock tech’s automotive work are cutting new car keys and ignition switch re-keys. There’ll always be particular services that just a car dealership is able to do because of vehicle suppliers never offering universal pieces to the public.

Household locks and keys are generally a lock specialist’s specialty. There are a lot of digital systems which are over-taking the lock and key in a large number of households throughout the states. Only the best lock pros will be able to work schlage locks, security systems, and security safes, yet most non commercial locksmiths will be able to install gate locks or fix existing types. Many companies and job requirements can produce different costs due to the equipment and time considered necessary for each project, so make certain to request a quote up-front.
